Porto Dinheiro

Porto Dinheiro
Porto Dinheiro beach, located only half an hour away south from Peniche, is one of the most surprising beaches of Center of Portugal's west coast. Rich in paleontological heritage, unique fishing traditions, along with a soul-touching natural landscape of cliffs and natural ponds by the sea. A time travel !

Meet the Dinos !

Several fossils have been excavated on the cliffs of Porto Dinheiro Beach. A sauropod dinosaur, named Dinheirosaurus lourinhanensis, was one of the most emblematic discoveries and its name pays homage to the place where it was found, namely Lourinhã.

On these cliffs, we can also see traces of ancient rivers that existed here around 150 million years ago. In the rocks, we can see small pinkish grains, similar to those found in the granite of the Berlenga islands. The presence of these grains indicates that, 150 million years ago, rivers flowed from this archipelago to the east.

Curious lobster warehouses

Porto Dinheiro beach used to be a lively fishing spot and we can still witness today eye-catching grids made of stone by the sea that were used as lobster warehouses. Lobsters were kept in these stone grids until September, when they were put on sale.

With its rocky promontory and extensive sandy beach protecting it from the waves, Porto Dinheiro is a natural harbour for small fishing boats. Here, this traditional activity is in decline, but it remains alive in local memories and traditions.

Every year in August, the Festa do Mar (Sea Festival) is held, where a procession carries the image of Nossa Senhora de Monserrate from the Church of Ribamar to the beach and from there by boat to Peniche, to meet the image of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem.
