Eugénio de Andrade

Eugénio de Andrade
Born in the village of Póvoa da Atalaia, in Fundão, Eugénio de Andrade is one of the most gifted Portuguese poets of all times. An acclaimed author who paid homage to his roots and to the feminine soul.

Faithful to his humble origins, the poet soon learned the beauty of small yet essential things in life, as he so brilliantly stated in the work Poetry and Prose:

I am the son of peasants; I spent my childhood in one of those villages in Beira Baixa that stretch into the Alentejo, and from a young age, the only things I ever knew in abundance were the sun and water.

In those days, which were not marked by poverty only because they were filled with my mother’s watchful and tireless love, I learnt that there are few things that are absolutely necessary.

It is these things that my verses love and celebrate. Earth and water, light and wind have come together to give form to all the love of which my poetry is capable. My roots have been immersed since childhood in the most elemental world.

The happy childhood in Póvoa da Atalaia has taught him the importance of natural elements, of never-ending views and landscapes, along with the deeply devotional love of her mother. All his poems are punctuated by a sense of

A fidelidade à origem, ao lugar primordial, perpassa por toda a sua obra, em palavras e versos muito belos, podendo mesmo dizer-se que os territórios da infância e o tempo do "falar materno" marcariam, de forma muito nítida, a sua produção poética.
