The impressive Historical Village of Monsanto, inhabited by gigantic rocks of curious shapes, was the stage of the prequel "The House of the Dragon". Monsanto became Dragon Stone, the home of House Targaryen. This episode was set 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones".
The production of "The House of the Dragon" was deeply impressed by the whole setting of Monsanto, its one-of-a-kind atmosphere, as well as by the involvement of the community. In fact, locals were highly collaborative during the shooting of this streaming series by offering their homes and working along on the series.
This was also a great opportunity to showcase Portugal as a great destination for movie making with world class professionals and a deep know-how. Successful Sofia de Noronha, founder of Lisbon-based Sagesse Productions, was responsible for attracting this mega production to Portugal, as well as the blockbuster "Fast and Furious".
Filming in Monsanto was absolutely challenging, because of the special characteristics of the place and difficult accesses, but it proved to be a perfect Dragon Stone. One of those blown-away places! For the whole world to see.
