Legend has it that the Fruit Square was offered by the Queen Dona Leonor to the agricultural producers of the region, in order to sell there their products.
Even though there is no historical proof of that offer, the truth is that the Fruit Market is working still today in the former spot where it started in the end of the 15th century. Every single day the colourful market stands are set in the only daily open-air market in the country.
The main attraction of the city of Caldas da Rainha was the Thermal Hospital of Our Lady of Pópulo, erected by the Queen Dona Leonor in 1485. However, the trade development in the City became so intense that producers of the surrounding areas were drawn to Caldas da Rainha to sell their products.
Since the end of the 15th century till nowadays, the beautiful colours of fruits & veggies in Portugal’s most iconic open-air market!
