The National Museum of Resistance and Freedom is a place of repair and recognition of more than 2600 political prisoners. Anti-fascist men and women who fought for freedom and who dreamt of democracy.
The National Museum of Resistance and Freedom preserves the historical memory of Peniche Fortress, symbolising the struggle for freedom and democracy.
The National Museum of Resistance and Freedom is born out of the recognition of the Peniche Fortress as a place of memory and a symbol of the national struggle for freedom. It has international resonances in the ancestral and current struggle for Democracy and respect for Human Rights.
Having a multidisciplinary nature, the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom is meant to preserve the historical memory of the Peniche Fortress, the fight of the Portuguese People and, in particular, their Resistance to Dictatorship, for Freedom and Democracy.
