Buracas do Casmilo

At the heart of Sicó Mountain, near Coimbra, lies one of Portugal's most incredible geological spots: the valley of Buracas do Casmilo. This Swiss cheese resembling natural monument stands out for its impressive holes engraved in the rocks.

The valley of Buracas do Casmilo holds the biggest concentration of holes in Portugal. These holes are small caves that have developed horizontally with entrances as high as 10 meters! Allegedly, these limestone formations were created in times of harsh freezing weather and the caves were the shelters for goats and sheep.

Holding a deeply mysterious aura, Buracas de Casmilo continues to be one of Portugal's best-kept natural secrets. The walking trail starting in Casmilo village is quite simple and absolutely jaw-dropping! It is a well-signed walking trail that continues along the valley amidst the most inspiring natural landscapes. There is a short walking trail, which is 3,5 km long and a longer one along 6,5 km.

Ideal for families, hikers or climbing aficionados, Buracas do Casmilo can also be the perfect place to unplug and to hear the most soul-soothing silence!
