The fairy tale village of Covas do Monte, located in a deep valley in Freita Mountain, in the region of São Pedro do Sul, near Viseu, is one of those special places where we can feel a true connection to Nature. A place where all words seem superficial. A place to feel the blessing of being alive. An hidden gem.
Perfect example of a rural Portugal, the 450 meters-high village of Covas do Monte, in São Pedro do Sul, takes us to a time that for many seems far away, but that has its charm. In this small mountain village, the inhabitants are dedicated to agriculture and livestock farming, as in many other places of our country. But in Covas do Monte, there is the peculiarity that there are more goats than human inhabitants.
Just over half a hundred people live here, and 2500 goats. The village is surrounded by a unique scenery of mountains 1000 metres high and springs that throughout the year bring more life to the landscape. The schist houses, typical of the region, fit perfectly into this landscape, being arranged in winding streets at the foot of the mountain.
To visit the village, travellers need to follow a winding but beautiful path, which crosses the Freita mountain range and allows you to glimpse those of Montemuro and Gralheira.
A place to discover with time. No need to rush. Because Time is the greatest luxury!
