Salicornia is a succulent plant that usually grows in salt ponds, on beaches and among mangroves. It is a salty plant with countless benefits for human health that can be used for food purposes. The company Horta da Ria, based in Aveiro, sells fresh salicornia, salicornia powder or green salt and preserved salicornia.
The 3 founders of Horta da Ria were driven by the passion for the fascinating biodiversity of Aveiro Lagoon. Salicornia ramosissima is a halophyte species, better known as "glasswort". It is part of the genus Salicornia, which includes plants that have been used for over 500 years in the diet of Mankind.
From a medicinal and pharmacological point of view, several species in the genus Salicornia exhibit various biological activities, such as anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour properties, among others. Its nutritional potential results from the fact that it is a source of antioxidant compounds, Omega 3, as well as its sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron content. It grows naturally in the old salt marshes of Ria de Aveiro and it is collected between March and September.
