Ferreira de Castro

Ferreira de Castro
Originally published in 1947, the novel A Lã e a Neve (Wool and Snow) by prestigious Portuguese writer Ferreira de Castro is an inspiring journey across the landscapes and the identity of Covilhã, Portugal's first factory city. The land of wool and snow, inhabited by relentless factory workers who dare to dream of a better future.

This novel takes place during the period of World War II, consisting of a powerful portrayal of an impoverished country dominated by dictatorship and deep-rooted social inequalities. A Lã e a Neve is a touching testimonial of the cultural identity of the mountain region of Serra da Estrela, as well as reference in Portuguese literature.

The plot follows the journey of Horácio, a shepherd in Manteigas who longs to one day be financially able to buy the house of his dreams to live in with his family, until he becomes a weaver in a factory in Covilhã and is confronted with the harsh reality of working-class life.

Set in the 1940s, it looks at the isolated mountains and the precarious conditions in which the mountain people live, and at the heyday of the industrial and textile world in Covilhã, where work becomes an important social demand.

Ferreira de Castro confronts us with the relentless search of men and women for better living conditions, hoping that one day the ‘new world’ to which they all aspire will arrive.

An in-depth look about the complex struggle of those who only wish to belong. A quest for a rightful place in the world.
