Built in 1862, during the reign of King Luís, the Boutaca Bridge was part of the ancient Royal Road between Lisbon and Porto.
Boutaca Bridge is located on the Ribeira de Calvaria, near the UNESCO World Heritage Monastery of Batalha.
Built in the Neo-Gothic style, it features a straight bridge deck approximately 60 metres long. It rests on six pointed arches reinforced by buttresses. The parapet, decorated with tracery and pinnacles, is particularly striking.
The four romantic side pavilions, with their carved stonework and floral motifs, such as fleurs-de-lis, have had many uses: one served as a guard’s house, another as a tool store.
