The Royal Ice Factory is a testimony of those remote times when ice was produced for the Royal court in Lisbon. Life before the fridge era.
Located at the heart of Montejunto Mountain, the Royal Ice Factory transformed snow in ice to satisfy the wishes of His Royal Highness. The Royal Ice Factory was built in 1741, 600 metes above sea level in a cold and wet zone. It produced ice blocks for 120 years that refreshed the royal court and the chic Lisbon cafés.
In the month of September the 44 tanks were filled with water and during the cold nights the water froze. When the ice formed and even before the sunset the ice blocks were transported to Lisbon. These were the so-called "snow boats".
The Royal Ice Factory was classified National Monument in 1997. The activity of the Royal Ice Factory ended in the late 19th century.
