The protected designation of origin Aguardente DOC Lourinhã is actually the only demarcated region in Portugal for the production of brandy ("aguardente"). In the European Union there are only 3 demarcated brandy-producing regions, namely: Lourinhã and the French regions Cognac and Armagnac.
The demarcated brandy-producing region of Lourinhã was created in 1992. The DOC Aguardente Lourinhã is made with several recommended and authorised wine varieties, white and red. Ageing takes place in the region, exclusively in oak barrels with a capacity of up to 800 litres.
It is produced by Adega Cooperativa da Lourinhã and Quinta do Rol.
Adega Cooperativa da Lourinhã organises guided visits, as well as tastings. During the visits, participants can learn more about the production process and brandy ageing.
