Varanda de Nazaré

Varanda de Nazaré
In 2026, the religious and artistic festival "Varanda de Nazaré" celebrates its 16th anniversary. Organised by popular Brazilian singer Fafá de Belém, this event became a milestone of the century-old Círio de Nazaré, held every year in October in Belém do Pará, Brazil.

This year's theme is "Courage that flourishes in faith", inspired by the force of manless warrior women of Amazonia called "icamiabas". These fearless women crafted the "muiraquitãs", frog-shaped amulets that became symbols of protection for the peoples of the Amazon.

Named Fátima in honour of her father’s devotion to Our Lady of Fátima, the artist revealed that, over the years, this connection had been “transferred” to Our Lady of Nazaré.

When she left Belém at the age of 18, Fafá continued the tradition of taking part in the Círio de Nazaré celebrations, including those held in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the singer, people from Pará carry this devotion with them wherever they go. She also highlighted the close bond that the faithful forge with Our Lady of Nazaré, who is seen as a constant presence in their daily lives and through life’s difficulties.

Varanda da Amazônia Forum, which is part of the programme conceived by the singer, enters its fourth year in 2026. The theme, which ties in directly with Varanda, will be ‘Amazônia, a feminine noun’. Both projects aim, this year, to highlight the magnitude of ancestral feminine greatness in the Amazon.

Another major development for the cultural movement in 2026 is that, for the first time, Fafá will take Varanda to the Sanctuary of Nazaré in Portugal on September 8th.
