Gardunha Sheep Butter Cheese: The "Best Cheese in the World" is actually Portuguese!
With numerous national and international awards, the Quinta do Pomar cheese factory was founded in 1983, when Joaquim Duarte Alves and his wife, Maria José Lucas, decided to return to Soalheira after emigrating to France.
In 2015, they opened a new cheese factory, using more modern technology, but "preserving the same characteristics and ingredients without altering the original flavor." The Quinta do Pomar Butter Sheep's Cheese was named the "Best Cheese in the World" at the 2024 World Cheese Awards.
In addition to producing various mixed cheeses, sheep's cheese, and goat's cheese, including DOP Beira Baixa – Castelo Branco, and requeijão (Cream cheese), Quinta do Pomar also schedules tours and cheese workshops.

The Municipality of Fundão organises every year visits to the blossoming cherry trees that take place from March to April, as well as several exciting cherry-related activities, such as: mindfulness sessions; trains tours in partnership with the Portuguese railways; meditation walking tours or cherry tree sponsorship.
